Slovakia See & Do

Tatras Slovakia

Covered almost entirely by the Carpathian Mountains (also known locally as the Tatras), Slovakia is the Central European country situated at the highest altitude. As you can imagine, Slovak roads are quite spectacular, especially the ones in the eastern part of the country. This 5-million strong state has split from its neighbour, the Czech Republic, roughly 20 years ago and has now grown into a powerhouse of the automotive industry, with almost one million cars being produced here every year. Slovakia is not a big tourist destination – Vienna, the nearby capital of Austria, attracts more tourists per year than Slovakia as a whole. Nevertheless, Slovakia has stunning beauty and colourful cultural aspects waiting to be discovered.

Bratislava

Bratislava

Your tour of Slovakia should start in Vienna in Austria. Bratislava has its own international airport, but it is much smaller. The Slovak capital is just half an hour’s drive away from Vienna. Bratislava is one of the major cities situated on the Danube, with the Hrad Castle overlooking the town from up on a hill. The castle houses a medieval weapons and art expo and is a good belvedere point from where, they say, one can see as far as Vienna on a clear day. Because of Slovakia’s Austro-Hungarian legacy, Bratislava itself is similar to cities such as Budapest or Salzburg, with a small old centre. A walk around the city’s winding streets, going through the small antique shops, will certainly make for a pleasant experience.

Bojnice Castle

Bojnice Castle

Heading north, we pass through the lovely cities of Trencin and Trnava. Both are small, Central European towns, with old buildings displaying exquisite classical architecture. Trencin also has a spectacular medieval castle that can be visited for a small fee, while Trvana boosts one the most impressive cathedrals of Slovakia. Going off the motorway towards the south, the winding road is a pleasure to drive on for any motorist. The destination is even better: Bojnice Castle. This fairytale destination was built in the 12th century, as a majestic exhibit of Romantic architecture. The castle overlooks the small town of Bojnice and its grounds include a 700 year-old linden tree.

Banska Stiavnica

Banska Stiavnica

To the east, the High Tatra Mountains boost the highest peaks of the Carpathians. The area is mostly forested, with rich wildlife and flora. Lots of hiking trails lead you up on Slovakia’s peaks, allowing you to enjoy some splendid views and loads of fresh air. The Demanovska Ice Cave is a must see for nature lovers – and also history-addicts, as it is one of the earliest discovered caves in history. We end our tour of Slovakia in the centre of the country, in the small urban settlement of Banska Stiavnica, one of the finest examples of rural medieval architecture in Slovakia.

Overall, Slovakia has a lot to offer to its visitors, if you know where to look; especially to those with a car that love driving. In this country, road trips, not just sceneries, can be breathtaking.
