Massachusetts is rich with American history, the American Revolution began here and they were one of the most influential of the original thirteen colonies. It’s no wonder that today, people take road trips across Massachusetts to breathe in the history and the ocean air.

Begin in one of the oldest cities in America - Boston, the state’s capital and largest city. Spend some time in the city walking down the Freedom Trail in the heart of downtown and discover the history of the American Revolution. Or, grab a hot dog at the famous Fenway Park, home of the Red Sox. The city has many museums you can visit as well. Before leaving the area, take a trip to Minute Man National park and witness the area where the first battle of the American Revolution was held.

Begin your road trip in Massachusetts by heading south down Highway 3 to Plymouth, a city with outstanding history running through its veins. See Plymouth Rock, or visit the National Monument to the Forefathers before heading to the Plimoth Plantation to step right back into the 17th century.

Drive the long road down through Cape Cod on Route 6A and go past charming east coast towns. These quaint places have some historic charm, so stop along the and visit places like Barnstable, Yarmouth, Brewster, and Orleans. You’ll love the drive along coastlines through old towns and down to the beaches. Take your time though this area, even four or five days to enjoy it all.

Head up the I-90 and I-91 towards Greenfield. Here begins the gorgeous drive along Mohawk Trail. Originally a Native American footpath, the trail was transformed into America’s first scenic route when cars gained popularity. Stretch your legs first in Greenfield at the Northfield Mountain and Recreation Environmental Center with long trails for hiking.

The route itself is filled with historical sites, wildlife, maple sugar trees and hiking trails – so stop along the way and see the old heart of America. Cross through the town of Shelburne Falls and the beautiful Bridge of Flowers. Drive up the highest elevation point at Whitcomb Summit, then down through the Hoosac Tunnels before stopping at Hairpin Turn to take in expansive views of four states from high above. The drive ends in Williamstown, offering a mix of architecture, museums, and shopping.

A road trip through Massachusetts is sure to fill you with awe and wonder at the history of this place, and the roads will beckon you back to drive through their scenic vistas time and time again.
